L’histoire
GONE WITH THE SMELL
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
His chest is heaving with exhaustion as he realises these might be his last breaths. Spread out on the muddy ground, he looks at his hand covered in dirt and grass clutching his rifle. All around him he can hear the echoed sounds of war, falling away under his heavy gasps.
He suddenly feels the cold penetrate with sodden clothes and sees the morning mist rising from the earth. He feels a shadow cloak him as his enemy approaches. He turns his head, staring into their eyes, still gasping for breath.
The figure stops. The two adversaries study each other’s faces, looking for a sign, a moment that tells them which move to play next. Abruptly his opponent turns and runs.
His neck still craning around, he watches the figure slowly disappear and suddenly he is gone with the smell of smoke still thick in the air.
